In the quest for hill climbing speed there is something that is really
important: your strength foundation must come first if you want to climb
fast!
All too often, cyclists head out for the hills, hoping to simply climb and get stronger. Unfortunately, this rarely happens.
Why? Simple, if the underlying strength foundation is not there, then you have nothing to leverage off and nothing to improve from.
Think of a house. What is the most critical part of any well built house? The Foundation.
Doesn't really matter how well everything else is produced, if the foundation is weak, the house will crumble!
Same thing with you. Focus on your underlying foundation of strength first and foremost during your off-the-bike training and you will be rewarded in the hills!
One of the secrets to our remote coaching programs success is building strength before speed though a four week block of functional strength training.
How much strength Work do you need? Only about 2-3, short 15 to 20 minute sessions per week will do it.

When you get off the bike and get strong, you will get back on the bike and be stronger! All you have to do is a little work and get big results.
And you can take that to the hills and Ride up them faster that you have before!

David,
I couldn't agree with this insight more. A couple of months ago I ordered Matt Brindles' Power Up Functional Strength Training DVD. I followed the steps and implemented it into my morning training 4X per week. The results were obvious this past week end when I went into the Georgia hills to do some mountain biking. The climbs were often technical, long and it was hot out. I powered up everything I rode and felt like I had more to spare. I've always been an "ok" climber but now I feel like a power climber. Here's the kicker. I haven't gotten past the intermediate program 1 yet on the DVD..! |

Fantastic Steve. Great to hear that you're getting excellent results form the DVD. It's powerful stuff.

Thanks for your "climbing tip", I totally agree with you.
Planning to do some Yengar Yoga in the near future, I like the core strength work and flexibility exercises. |
