Free Melbourne to Warrnambool training sessions
- Published 02-Oct-08
We are running two free informal Melbourne to Warrnambool Training sessions over the next two Thursdays; the 9th and 16th of October.
You'll get the chance to ride and talk with Brendan Rowbotham who has completed the Melbourne to Warrnambool 12 times with a best finish of 7th. This is a great chance to discuss race preparation, nutrition and the logistics leading up to the Melbourne to Warrnambool as well as race tactics for race day with Brendan. I'll be there as well.
If you can get the time this is a great chance to gets some solid KM's in for the Melbourne to Warrnambool, Tour of Bright or Around the Bay in a Day. The plan is to leave at 6.00am sharp from the corner of North Road and Nepean Hwy. Riding down with the "North Road ride" till Mordialloc. We will keep going straight on to Frankston and do a climb of Two Bays, Canadian Bay, Sandells and then ride down and climb Arthurs Seat - Lovely view from the top! From Arthurs Seat we will ride on to Sorrento for lunch then return via the coastal road.
Good for the soul and a great day of annual leave relaxing on the bike. About 200+ km's in total. The pace will be slow-ish but you will have to be an A,B or at the very worst the top end of C grade. For insurance reasons you must also hold a current Cycling Australia racing license. As there is no on-road support please also ensure that you bring food, drink and clothing appropriate for this distance.
Please let me know if you are in by contacting me using our contact form. You are welcome to invite your friends along as well. The plan is to get a group of us to make it more enjoyable. Should be back in Melbourne by about 3pm. Enough time for a little nap and then dinner before the family gets home. There will be no charge for these informal training rides.

Southern Vets moves to Cycling Australia
- Published 30-Sep-08
On the back of the recent move of the Tasmanian Veterans Cycling Club from the Australian Veterans Cycling Association (AVCC) to Cycling Australia (CA) Southern Vets Cycling Club took the vote to their members last night. The result was an overwhelming support to affiliate with CA. The ever increasing pressure from the police and government for cycling organisations to be more accountable for their road racing has been the main driver. Southern Vets members agreed that alignment with CA is the right decision in moving with the times. CA is considered the recognised body representing cycle racing in Australia and in these uncertain times Southern Vets members believe the alliance with CA will help bring their club into a new era and ensure the future of masters cycling in Australia. This is based on consolidating and strengthening cycling administration and representation for cycling in Australia under one body. Southern Vets members were attracted to CA's training, resources for racing cyclists and supporting officials as well as their professionalism and ability to support minority cycling groups like the disabled cyclists. The meeting addressed current contentious issues regarding dual licences (Veterans and Masters Licences), more flexibility with day licences and insurance for cyclists. Impact on the memberships of the local cycling clubs; being Eastern Vets, Chelsea and Peninsula Cycling Club and Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club are still unknown at this point.

Criterium or 'crit' racing tends to raced over the summer season. The format is laps of a short circuit. They usually have no set distance but instead the race is run over a set time and then a number of laps. For example Caulfield Carnegie Cycling Club A and B grade at Glenvale Crescent in Mulgrave, Victoria, race for 60 minutes and then three laps, while C and D grade race for less time, but still with 3 laps at the completion of the time. So, having a timer as part of your cycle computer is therefore useful! Here are some other useful tips to get you started. Click on the "full story" link below for more...

Tips on getting the right bicycle pump

No one wants to be stuck in the middle of no-where with a flat tyre. That's what makes a frame pump such a popular and essential accessory. There are two types of frame pumps, those made for off road and those made for road biking. The difference has to do with the difference in tyres. Off-road tyres are fatter, require more volume and are run at lower pressures. Conversely, road tyres are skinnier and take less air, but at much higher pressures. Frame pumps are designed for these differences.
