Resting heart rate indicates your fitness
Your resting heart rate is often a good determination as to how fit you are, as well as indicating if you're either over training or unwell - showing up as unexplained increases in resting heart rate. If using a heart rate monitor, make sure that there is a good connection between the chest strap and your chest, with adequate connection fluid, as often most heart rate monitors will require a little body perspiration prior to performing consistently.
It’s important to remember that the best time to take this test is first thing in the morning, when you awake, as simply getting up and walking around your bedroom will cause your heart rate to rise, with other factors such as smoking or caffeine, also causing an increase. Remember to take your resting heart rate over at least 3 days so that you can get an average reading.
For example if on day one you record 72 bpm (beats per minute) day two you record 78 bpm and on day three you record 72 bpm, then your average is 74 bpm.
Look at recording your time for a full minute to make the test as accurate as possible.
As you become fitter through cycling, your heart becomes more efficient at pumping blood around the body, especially if combined with a reduction of the plaque (fatty deposits) within your arteries. As a result you will find your resting heart rate (RHR) gets lower so you will need to check your RHR on a regular basis and recalculate any target zones you have, especially if working with a heart rate monitor.

Hi
I'm a 47 year old male. The other day I was sitting in front of the telle with my heart rate monitor on to see what my resting rate is. It was 46bpm. In Your opinion, what does that say to you about my fitness? Regards Phil |

Hi Phil, Well that's a great resting HR for your age. It demonstrates that you have great cardiovascular fitness. A strong heart means you have a great capacity to do well in recreational rides and bike racing.

David, Being 61 and having a resting heart rate of 42, my GP sent me off for an ECG. The result came back: "Nothing wrong with his heart, bit slow"!!! My question is, my Polar says my VO2 Max is 48 and max HR is 164. Regularly in races or hill climbs, my heart rate is in the high 170s and will peak at 182, without feeling I am going to die. How are these outcomes reconciled with the Polar reading.

Hi Richard, The Polar watch calculates your estimated max HR from an algorithm based on many factors including your age. The algorithm is set around the mean distribution of the general population. In your case you far exceed this band as your estimated max HR for your age is 159 (220 minus your age). Which is well below your actual max HR of 182! This indicates that you are actually extremely fit when placed alongside people of your same age. And… a very good example why it's important to use the estimated max HR measure as a guide only, setting your MaxHR to actual real measured results.
