Final Position: 2nd. I couldn’t believe it, second again… I was really hoping for a win this race. I came into it
with 240kms of training already done, mostly in the hills and a rest day on the Saturday. I felt really strong. The whole race I held my position well,
chased down
attacks that mattered and let the ones come back that didn’t. The final lap I was coming around the second last corner, I had moved up into third place, ready for the final sprint or to respond to a late
attack. One of the juniors was leading who I knew would not have legs come the final sprint… but on the second last corner the guy in front of me hit a stick or a stone, got the wobbles and sat up thinking he’d got a flat… I called to him to keep pushing seeing the tyres were fine, he picked it up again but had given some distance to the junior out front… I made the stupid decision at that point to stay behind captain wobbles around the final corner rather than going after the junior. I
pulled out and sprinted after the final corner and although I was closing in fast on the junior on the final straight, it was too much distance to make up by the finish line. You can see from my top speed in the final sprint that it is much faster than any previous top speed I’ve achieved (by about 6km/h)… I claimed second at the desk and asked for my C grade race number. The lady warned me that I should be going up to C grade if I can finish a C grade race after racing D grade… but I really want a win before I move up, so I
pulled off
with 3 laps to go in C grade. Not just that, but I realised after 10 minutes or so into the C grade race that my HRM was turned off…
