The race started with the first two laps under control and all riders in a mass start. After the pace car left the circuit it was basically hammer and tong for the next hour with an average pace of 42km/h on a very windy night at the Sandown circuit. With such large numbers it was easy to find shelter from the wind, still I quickly pushed up to the pointy end of the peloton so I could keep an eye out for attacks off the front. The summer of racing has help me learn not to chase down every break and exhaust myself in the process. I therefore eased into a good rhythm and watched as each attack was reeled in by the group. During the race, there was no point in time were I was feeling outdone. My average heart rate for the race was 151 which is in my E2 zone, so I wasn't really working that hard. Now that I have built strength on the bike by lots of hard racing, hill repeats and mountain climbs, I have been concentrating on two things. Base K's at rec/E1 and sprinting. I was very pleased with the length I was able to maintain my sprint and the top speed attained. It was only 52Km/h but straight into a strong head wind. I finished 7th all up and 1st in B-Grade. It was my last B-Grade race as I got the "welcome to A-Grade" while being handed my $100 prize.
