This race looks unusually
short from the HRM details looking at it now… maybe it stopped working for a bit
during this race? Anyway, this race went pretty well… I focused on holding my
position during the race and was successful. I managed to sit about
5
th wheel for the majority of the race, apart from one time when the
pace went up because A grade had just passed and I did not bother because we
would have been told to back off anyway. In this race I was sort of too smart
for my own good in the end. I was in 3
rd spot going into the
3
rd last and 2
nd last laps… too exposed to the wind and
was easily passed on the last lap and could not make up anymore places whilst
still leaving some energy in reserve for the sprint. I was proud to be able to
hold my position well, but disappointed I really sat too high up in position for
the sprint. I
nearly forgot to
get in the
drops before the sprint finish, but did get down there halfway
through the final lap - and I am happy to report that since you told me bell
lap =
drops lap – apart from this close one I have not made the mistake since.
I have also started to get in the
drops during crucial parts of the race where
things get a little more intense or there is little protection and a bit of a
headwind. I would count this race as average performance and a lesson in not
sitting too high up towards the end of the race. All other races that have
resulted in a placing I have been further back towards the last lap. Although
in saying that, sometimes a higher position can benefit you but it really
depends on how messy the sprint finish is, if people can get a good
jump on you
and you’re too far up, it can be a disadvantage I
guess.
