Perkins and French in Australian Team for Copenhagen World Cup

Cycling Australia has confirmed the members of the Australian team to contest the fourth and final round of the 2007-08 UCI Track World Cup series to be raced in Copenhagen from this Friday 15 - Sunday 17 February. Australian National Team - 'The Cyclones' Mark French (St Kilda CC) Shane Perkins (Carnegie Caulfield CC) Matthew Goss (TAS) Cameron Meyer (WA) Travis Meyer (WA) Luke Roberts (SA) With qualification for the Manchester World Championships and ultimately the Olympic Games, resting on rankings following World Cup performances, Mark and Shane will be looking for a good final World Cup event - Cycling sport VIC

Perkins makes it a clean sweep

MELBOURNE cyclist Shane Perkins gave himself the perfect present when completed a clean sweep of UCI international sprint events when he won the individual sprint final at Devonport last night.

Shane is in Tasmania for the Track Christmas Carnival and raced at Launceston on 28th Dec - here are his results.

In the last event at the three-day meet, Perkins blitzed Frenchman Michael D'Almeida, the fastest qualifier, in two straight heats in the best-of-three final, stopping the clock at 10.7sec for the final 200m.

The big prize money on offer has once again attracted a big field to the JKA International Keirin event. The racing began well – once again – for the home team as Great Britain's Matt Crampton took the first race from Kazunari Watanabe of Japan; the second went to Michael Almeida (US Creteil) from World Kilometre champion Teun Mulder of the Netherlands.

    Kenny takes gold lying down

Sky+ HD’s Jason Kenny took the men’s sprint in spectacular fashion as he and silver medallist Shane Perkinsof Australia both crossed the line on their backs in the second race. Kenny, having won the first race was pronounced the winner and gold medallist as he crossed the line first. The first race had been a close affair with Perkins just failing to overcome the Olympic silver medallist, and the second was just as tight until the pair came together with just a few metres remaining. Both riders were unhurt save for a few friction burns from the track surface.

Lastest news from Shane in Copenhagen for the UCI World Cup 2008

Hi David,   I am just in Copenhagen at the moment very cold here. Racing world cup on the weekend. Feeling good and looking forward to racing. Had a light training track session yesterday with a touch up gym session yesterday afternoon.   Australian titles was very interesting and I am happy with the way I was going. I have learnt a lot about my body from training myself this past 6 months and have a lot more to learn to hit the perfect form. But Australian titles were a great judge although with some controversy in the sprint life goes on…. I would have liked to be in the final of the sprint but ended up with the bronze, and in the team sprint was happy with my times and have a bit of work to get those down before the worlds in end of march. I’m looking forward to the challenge though. The Keirin I was feeling great just got boxed and unable to make a smooth run to the finish. My standing lap early in the week I was happy with as I have not been doing too much concentration on the standing lap this past couple months. But to be doing 17.8 on every occasion I touch the start gate I am very happy with the constancy.   Yours gratefully Shane Perkins
