Neil Wesley's Report - Friday 22 Feb 2008

Today I decided to ride with the Vets. I rode to & from the race which allowed me to ride 95km including the race. The race was 46km I averaged only 37kms p/h, my average cadence was 89rpm, my average heart rate was 150 or 86.7% MHR. My maximum h/r was 174bpm. I spent 20mins in the base zone of 65-85% and 51mins above 85bpm. I was wrapped how easily I completed the race, I would normally expect to beat the guys I was against but I felt very comfortable. I was disappointed how I finished the race off but I haven't done any sprint practice at present. I got a good lead out but he went very early and died about 300m to go and as my opponents were sitting on they had the last drop on me. I would normally have jumped away from them but ran out of puff with about 50 m to go. I probably could have hung in there a bit better but I will be back to fight another day. Over all, I never like being beaten, but considering I haven't raced since early December and have only been doing base training I was amazed how easily I rode with these guys even though they attacked me several times. To me it is obvious the training is working. This time last year I was racing and only riding about 40ks for the week.
