Gareth Evans 2010 Audax Perth-Albany-Perth 1000

19May2012

Here is Gareth's report from the 2010 Audax Perth-Albany-Perth 1000. Truly epic event. Well done Gareth. It's been a pleasure coaching you and seeing your success.

Finished Perth-Albany-Perth 1000 yesterday in 69h20. A little tired and sore after three days on the bike. The Salsa Casserol went very well and never let me down. Roads were a bit rough at times and had me wishing for wider tyres with lower pressure. I'll take frictional drag in return of comfort any day on those multiple day events.

Great ride through some terrific country. The triple boggie road trains were a bit scary when they first started coming past on the Albany hwy but where never a problem.

The Sterling Ranges were beautiful, help by the fact i was goin well at that point and able to enjoy the views. For me the high light was the giant kauri forests, which were simply amazing. A magnificent sight.

Thanks again for all you help and encouragement. It made such a difference to my enjoyment of the event. Coming back from the tail end to catch main field on day three was very satisfying. Probably one of the most satisfying on an Audax event. I had planed to cruise the last 60km and savour the moment, but I hooked up with a bunch and pushed harder. By the finish I was almost flat out and the bunch was down to two!

Being able to ride faster for longer turned the event from being a grim slog to an "enjoyable" achievement. Instead of crawling over the finish line almost sprinted.

Regards,

Gareth.
