Both Jodie and I are in the final throws of our preparation for the Australian Masters Road Championships in Ballarat and the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide.

I was downloading Andrew Hodges's data in the weekend prior to my hookup with him and noticed a new personal best in his peak power. I’ve been working with Andrew (pictured above at the top of Mt Buffalo on the Nov 2010 Bright Boot Camp) for several years now. Andrew and his lovely wife Lucinda live in Singapore Andrew and have been to several of our Boot camps and I have coached both of them. Andrew started on the remote coaching program in November 2009 and I have been looking after him ever since while Lucinda did a block of training as preparation leading up to one of their European cycling trips last year. Like many of my clients, I consider Andrew and Lucinda my friends and it’s great to be working with such passionate cycling people.

Then Monday night with my hookup with Fran Medina from Bendigo (pictured below racing at the Australian Veterans South Pacific Championships) I got to hear about her handicap win at Newbridge.  Race report from her club reads

“In a tremendous finish, Fran Medina [8m], in a time of 1h. 1m. 8secs., an average of 37.5 kmh., held off Graham Lockwood [8m], in a strongly contested sprint, taking the honours. Followed by S. Auld [8m], M. Lavery [8m], R. Colwell [8m], K. Lacey [13m], and seventh P. O' Brien [16m].”

Fran is another of my long term clients. I’ve been coaching her since Feb 2008. Recently we have been working on getting her ready for the Australian Masters Games in a few weeks time. I really like working with Fran. She is one of my star cyclists and commits 100% to her training program every week.

We have been tracking Fran's power curve in WKO+ and here is her lift over this year. Yellow line is her power curve for this year while the red dotted line is for last year. Her 5 sec threshold power (THP) has jumped by 14%, 1 min THP by 29% and her 5 min THP by 16%.

Michael Hay who is a member of Eastern Vets placed 2nd on time behind former Giro d'Italia rider Tom Leaper in the Don Road hill climb.

Also we have been working with Damian Burke on his preparation for the Tour of Bright and other races. He sent me through a write-up about the up and coming inaugural Highlands Spring Classic that was published in the recent NVCC newsletter:

“Eighty riders will ascend to the small hilly township of Highlands this Sunday 2nd October to contest the inaugural Highlands Spring Classic.

The event has drawn a quality field across five grades with riders coming from all regions of Victoria.

In A grade, former Giro d'Italia rider Tom Leaper won't have it all his own way as his fellow Eastern club riders are well credentialed. Amongst them are the in-form Stefan Kirsch and Guy Green, both former medallists in the World Vets Championships in Belgium. Current Australian Vets age Champions Justin Mollison and Roy Clark will also be present alongside Anthony Chandler (silver medallist), and Andrew Weightman 7th place, and current Victorian Criterium Champion David Holt.  Northern will be lead by Geordie Probert who spent many years racing in France, former Preston Open Fastest Time winner Paul Logan, and breakaway specialist Kosmos Samaras”.

Earlier on this year we promoted an Australian Masters Games coaching package. All the people that enrolled have been training hard over the winter and making really good steady progress. I competed in the games a few years ago and it was great fun. So it’s exciting to be going over to Adelaide in a few weeks time and spending some time with them while they are competing.
