Remote Coaching Success from Peter Waldron

I started the remote coaching programme with Cycling-Inform in July this year. For the past two years I have been competing in occasional 100km Mountain Bike races as well as enjoying social rides on both the MTB and Road Bike. This year I also started racing on the road bike with Penrith Cycling Club in the criterium races in C grade. Prior to starting on the remote coaching programme I put in as many hours on the bike as I could spare but didn't really understand what was required to improve my performance.

When I joined the remote coaching programme I was allocated a coach, James McArdle. We have a weekly catch up to discuss my training from the previous week and set some goals for the coming weeks. I download my HRM data and he can see exactly what I have been doing and tailors the programme to suit. Having a structured training programme that is designed specifically around me has been a new experience. I have seen a steady improvement in my performance as my strength and fitness have improved.

The race results show that my training now is much more effective. Every training session has a purpose and I'm not wasting time just clocking up the kms. The encouragement and advice I get from James is great, he lets me know when I need to be working hard and when I need to pull back and recover.

I would recommend the Cycling-Inform remote coaching programme to anyone who is looking to improve their cycling performance.

Race Results from Kanangra Classic MTB Race Sunday 16th October in Kanangra Boyd National Park. A reasonably flat MTB race with only 1,600m of climbing over fire trails in the picturesque Kanangra-Boyd National Park. The pace was always going to be fast. The winner of the 100km event finished in 4 hrs 28 mins. I managed to finish in a time of 5 hrs 1 min in 19th place overall and 6th place in the Veterans (over 40) category.
