The ever popular mass participation event “Ride Like Crazy” goes from strength to strength – and yes it’s on again in 2012.

The event is proudly supported by the South Australia Police and has been running since 2009.  It all started after Senior Sergeant Mick Koener, a member of the STAR Force, was diagnosed with brain cancer.  The event, which had humble beginnings, is now a regular charity fund raising event for cancer research, prevention and treatment and is already entrenched as a part of Adelaide’s cycling calendar.

The event is conducted each year on the Sunday preceding the Tour Down under festivities and has attracted more than 4000 riders and participants since it started.

The event has many benefits for both riders and the community alike – in particular those impacted by cancer.  Amazingly, the event has raised a staggering $320,000 for cancer related charities – all whilst having a bit of fun and giving riders a chance to keep fit!  What a great mix.

The 2012 ride will mirror last year’s event and will be just as much fun.  Of course the event is not solely about raising funds for charity, but also assists the South Australia Police in spreading the very important messages about road safety.

One of the best things about the ride is that it caters for all riders’ skills levels and riding abilities.  Although it is not a race, it is certainly a challenge, with many riders aiming to push themselves.  Even so, there are just as many riders who choose to enjoy the scenery whilst stopping at one of the many well catered rest stations that are stocked by the generous sponsors that support Ride Like Crazy.  The routes for 2012 all take in the undulating Adelaide Hills, catering for different riding abilities and all finish at the Unley Oval where there are activities, music and refreshments to be enjoyed.

With the cold days of winter almost behind us and those brighter warmer mornings ahead, its time to think about also getting on board with this enjoyable and challenging ride – you won’t regret it and you will certainly remember it for all the right reasons.

Due to the popularity of the event the numbers will be limited so get in early.

Ride Details: Sunday 15 January 2012.

Three routes: 7.00 am starting at the Unley Shopping Centre car-park and finishing at Unley Oval (107.05km) or start at Woodside and complete the half ride (51.24km). Transport for riders to Woodside is available from the Unley Shopping Centre. This year we have added a short-cut route. Now riders undertaking the full distance ride have the option of turning left at Balhannah and travelling along the Onkaparinga Valley Road direct to Woodside.  This route will shave approximately 16km off the full distance.

Participants simply nominate to undertake the full distance ride when they register and can then take advantage of the shortcut route on the day if they wish.
