Here is Richard Wright's account of the Audax Alpine Classic 2009. I'm looking forward to seeing him at his next challenge, our Bright Boot camp in November 2009.

Hi David,

Did the 140 km for my 62nd birthday in the Alpine last weekend, and found out a few things. It was the best prepared I have ever been, after weekends in the Grampians and multiple runs up out local "hills", Tarrengower and Mt Alexander. Both are much steeper than Buffalo or Falls, but I now know lack length. I set myself a heart rate limit of 140 bpm, although I red-line at 182 bpm, and went at Buffalo. Cresting the top was a relief and a cruelty. There was another 4 km to go to Dingo Dell, with another killer climb on the way.

I was so "bushed" when I reached the Dell's carpark that I sprinted to the turnaround tent at the top. Tim Decker would be proud of me!!!

The descent was magic and my SRAM Red-equipped Ridley Helium was beautifully behaved.

But clearly the issue was the inability to climb the 30 kms or so required on Buffalo with any competence. I reckon the indications are that a bloke needs a Bright Boot Camp in November!!!

Cheers,

Richard Wright
