Grame's story about preparing for rides as an exec that's on the move.
I just participated in the Chairman's Ride of the Tour of California (sponsors ride) - two laps of Stage 8 - 70km hills course which I struggled over.
I am a senior exec that travels regularly overeas - always have. I currently live in LA. I am 185cm and 96kg so I have to really watch it. I'd call myself a serious recreational rider as its impossible to train enough to race but I can do a 100km rolling ride with the fast coffee shop groups - stick in a big hill and I am out the back fast.
I have worked out a fitness regime that keeps my weight down and keeps me at a base level until I get back on the bike (I stopped taking my bike with me years ago - way too much hassle) - I did weights for years so I know what to do in a gym but not so up on the core exercices you preach.
I have a business guys gym routine and a non gym routine (sometimes you just cant get there) and how to manage every day and night meetings that involve eating and drinking (I dont drink alchol number one rule!).
Also how to manage your day and ensure you get rest - when to do emails, overcome jet lag, what to do on the planes and how to prepare for your return and rebuild your fitness (I am an expert at 'comebacks'). I get about 2-3 weeks to do that and then I travel again and lose it so being realistic in your goals and who you ride with is also one of my tricks.
I often thought that this info would be of interest to other execs now that cycling is the new corporate golf!
Thanks for the story Grame. If you have something you think might be of interest to the wider cycling community then please send it through to us so we can publish it on our website.
