Given winter is upon us you may choose to take your bike on public transport – here are the rules in summary
The other day I picked up a brochure from a tram stating the rules at that apply when taking a bike on public transport in Victoria. These rules may stop you from getting those glares from other passengers when you travel with you bike. Given winter is upon us you may choose to take your bike on public transport – here are the rules in summary
A bike on a metropolitan train
- A bike can be taken free on metropolitan trains. However when doing so avoid using the first door on the first carriage as this area is for mobility impaired passengers.
- Also they request that you keep passageways and doorways clear and try to avoid busy carriages when travelling with your bike.
- If travelling with a folding bike you can use any door.
On a V/Line train:
- Folding bikes can be carried for free on V/Line trains. Conventional bikes can also be carried for free but their carriage depends on space availability.
- On some lines you much check your bike in at least 30 minutes prior to departure see www.vline.com.au
- They also stipulate that bikes must not be stored in overhead luggage racks. I am not sure how many people tried that before that rule can in!
On trams, buses and V/Line coaches:
- Only folding bikes can be carried for free on trams, buses and V/Line coaches. Conventional bikes are not permitted.
- If you have information about travelling with a bike on public transport in other states please let us know and we can advise our readers.
