Epic Tours 2024 Overview Video

The Epic Vuelta Peaks Zoom call covering the tour details.

Here is a classic cycling tour to challenge all recreational cyclists looking to tick off a full bucket list of epic climbs straight from La Vuelta, an España pro-cycling race. This Spanish cycling tour follows the Asturian and Cantabrian provinces in northern Spain, which are considered by many to be the spiritual home of the modern day ‘La Vuelta’. Just like Le Tour and the Giro, La Vuelta is full of EPIC climbs.

Join us in Asturias and test yourself on some of Europe’s most challenging climbs (Lagos de Covadonga, San Lorenzo, La Farrapona and L’Angliru, to name a few). Cantabria is also full of hidden gems, and while not as steep as their Asturian counterparts, there are numerous 25km+ climbs (and long flowing descents!) to contend with. If the names of climbs, such as San Glorio, Piedrasluengas and Palombera, don’t ring a bell yet, they certainly will by the time June 2024 comes around!

The tour starts in Leon and finishes in San Sebastian, important cultural and beachside cities, respectively. Leon, located north of Madrid, is integral to the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route. San Sebastian is the jewel of the Basque Country and is a favourite with almost everyone who visits Spain. It is the perfect place to relax after the Epic Vuelta Peaks cycling challenge is done and dusted. Take advantage of some free time along the Concha beach strip, which is impressively situated between Monte Igeldo and Monte Urgull.

Northern Spain is often called green Spain, and the impressive east-west mountain range is the perfect stage for road cycling enthusiasts. In simple terms, a massive limestone formation extends through the Asturias, León and Cantabria provinces, capturing heights above 2500 m elevation in many places. What is so amazing, though, is how close the mountains are to the Cantabrian Sea. In places, they are barely 15km from the sea, so imagine the cycling views that will be on offer! The best way to describe these mountains is as the ‘Spanish Dolomites’; jagged, eye-popping rock formations provide delights around every switchback. We hope you are ready to climb as the tour hits the high peaks of the Somiedo, Ubiñas-Mesa, Ponga, Saja Besaya and Picos de Europa (our favourite!) national parks.

What an amazing ten-days holiday through Spain’s premiere road cycling region!

Here is a classic cycling tour to challenge all recreational cyclists looking to tick off a full bucket list of epic climbs straight from the Tour de France pro-cycling race. This Pyrenees cycling tour starts from San Sebastian (Basque Country, Spain) and begins with no less than four Spain/France border crossings on the first day. The route through the Atlantic Pyrenees will take you to the pretty French village of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the spiritual home of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. From ‘St-Jean’, one of the most challenging climbs in the Pyrenees awaits ‘Larra-Larrau’. It is full of history and intrigue as Spanish legend Miguel Indurain (5 x TDF champion) saw his rein unravel on this monstrous climb in 1996.

On the way to the Midi-Pyrenees this backroad cycling tour takes you over numerous classic TDF climbs, including Col de la Pierre St Martin (Stage 10 summit / 2015 TDF), Col du Marie Blanque (Stage 5 / 2023 TDF) and Col d’Aubisque (Stage 18, hors categorie, 2022 TDF). Once we arrive and base ourselves in the Midi-Pyrenees for three nights, things start to become really exciting. The valley surrounding Argeles-Gazost has towering mountain peaks all around. Col du Soulor, Col du Spandelles, Hautacam, Luz Ardiden and that other climb that goes by the name ‘Tourmalet’ are all in easy striking distance. With the 20km designated bike path, which meanders along the Ousse River, it is the perfect place to ride and relax if you are looking for an easier day on the bike.

What makes this tour EPIC, in our opinion, is the great mix of cols that Le Tour has never used. The Pyrenees is home to several pristine national parks which the TDF cannot access. You will be in awe of the gigantic landscapes as you ride to ‘Cirque de Troumouse’ and ‘Cap d’Long’. Here, we are talking about old glaciers and reservoirs that sits at heights hovering around 2,000m elevation.

To round out an amazing trip, there will be a final stay in the quaint town of St-Lary Soulan. The final climbs to be tackled include Horquette d’Ancizan, which is perhaps our favourite valley in the entire Pyrenees, and Col du Portet, which was recently asphalted and is now the highest col for road cycling in the French Pyrenees.

What a fantastic ten-day holiday through the best of the Spanish & French Pyrenees!
